Joining a gym??

Fly by posting to ask a quick question!

I'm thinking of joining a local gym...It's still being built and is supposed to open in late October, so they're having membership specials to get people to sign up before it opens. Any thoughts from those who belong to a gym? It's an LA Fitness and looks really nice! It's only about 5-10 minutes away and would offer all the cardio equipment, weights, and, classes. Just looking for some thoughts...I've never been one to run on a treadmill, so I'm not sure how much I would utilize a gym. Maybe I could actually take up cross training?

Thanks for your thoughts! Have an awesome Friday, I'm heading out for a long run!

  1. I think joining a gym is definitely beneficial if you want to weight train. Also, I use the gym much more in the winter when it's freezing cold. The gym is also nice in the summer to mix up workouts (crosstraining).

Hope your long run went well!

  2. I live in Central PA and have belonged to LA Fitness in the past. They are very nice gyms (plenty of equipment, different classes offered, pools, clean...). The only down side is the training crew will definitely try to get you to sign up for training. Sometimes they are a little pushy so if you're not interested just make sure you let them know. Overall it's a nice gym if you like the "globo-gym" atmosphere.

  3. I would suggest joining if you are actually going to use it. I just use my apartment complex gym because it is free and has a few machines. I a hate the treadmill so I would never join a gym to use one.

  4. I think that the weight training is a great reason to join a gym! Also, I hate treadmills, but have been known to run on them if it's too cold/icy to run outside. Also - cross training is a good reason!

  5. I don't know anything about LA Fitness, but I love having a gym membership..it's great to hop in the pool or hit the weights when I don't feel like doing any actual cardio..I haven't utilized any of the classes much yet, but plan to in the 'off season'. If they're having specials on memberships it might be a good time!

  6. It's all about how often you're going to use it. Before I worked for a gym, I had a membership at a very cheap gym. I only used it 2-3 times a week, so I'm not sure I would have joined anything more expensive.

  7. I LOVE my gym! I love weight lifting so I definitely get my money's worth. I think if you're unsure then either ask for a 1-2 week guest pass so you can check it out and then sign up for a no contract deal. That way if you're not feelin it then you're not committed to anything. But gyms are great for cross training. Its also good to use the guest pass and try out the classes! If they have great classes like spin and you lvoe it then its definitely worth it :)

    have a fun run!

  8. I think its a great idea! Cross training is important so your body doesn't hit a plateau with just running. I do the stair master/step mill on days i don't run and sometimes i think i sweat more doing that than running 10-13 miles!

Also, if you happen to get injured (like myself) its good to have an alternative to running for low impact cardio workouts.
