Rest + shoe advice + dress! + pasta

As you may or may not have noticed, I haven’t posted about running for the past few days.  My last post about a “run” was on Saturday, and we all know what a disaster that was.  My shin still hurts, which is terrible.  I decided to take some time off because it was very painful to run and I don’t want to risk injury at this point in the game.  Training has been going well and I don’t want to risk losing the marathon that’s two months away still.  I have plenty of time to recover (hopefully…) and still be in great shape for the marathon.  I kind of wish I had a bike or something so I could be doing some sort of cardio…sadly the gym I signed up for doesn’t open until November otherwise it would be PERFECT right now.  I’ll see how I feel tomorrow…maybe I’ll just try going out for a few miles.

it’s all in the shoes

I switched my shoes at work to a less old pair of old running shoes…I definitely need to buy better shoes.  Do any nurses/doctors/other people who spend wayyy too much time on their feet have any recommendations for good shoes?  I’ve heard about Dansko shoes, but they’re a bit expensive…although worth it if they’re really as great as people say they are.  Especially because I bet they last longer than three months, which is about how much I’m getting out of my running shoes!  (and that’s with rotation…yikes!)

here comes the bridesmaid

My friend who is getting married actually picked our bridesmaid dresses, as well as the color!  This is none other than a major victory, so I’m pumped.  This is the winner, color and all (no, that’s not me!):

I headed over to the not-so-local David’s Bridal to try on sizes and placed my order, so it will be all mine in about six weeks!  We’re going to wear silver shawls during the ceremony because we have to have our shoulders covered.  My friend (another bridesmaid) is making them with her mom, so at least that will cut down on costs a bit.

cooking light presents

My mom sent me a subscription to Cooking Light (yay!) since I always read hers when at home, and they have some tasty recipes.  When I got my first issue, I immediately bookmarked some recipes!  I started with this Fresh Tomato, Sausage, and Pecorino Pasta recipe.

091709 Sausage Pasta 2 Not the best picture, but it was tasty!

I haven’t had sausage in awhile since it’s not really all that healthy, but it added a great taste to the pasta.  I would definitely make this again!  I also had some lemon-y asparagus on the side, which was fantastic.  This recipe seemed to make many more the the four servings that the recipe says it makes, which just means I get to enjoy it that much longer!

  1. When I was in residency and was on my feet all day, I wore a pair of croc clogs which wasn't the most fashionable shoes in the world but were really comfy. I'm sure you can find something that's fashionable and comfy if you look at crocs catalog on line. Just my two cents.

Hope your shin feels better soon. We need to get you back on the road!

  2. Sorry about your shin! I hope the pain clears up soon.

The pasta looks really good. I don't eat sausage that often, but it looks good in a dish with all the other tasty things.

  3. I'm a runner as well as an operating room nurse, so I'm pretty much on my feet for my entire shift. I also wear my running shoes for work when I've retired them from running. However, I alternate between them and a pair of Merrell clogs. This has helped me with my intermittent foot problems. I have worn Dansko clogs in the past, but their heels are rather high for me, and I've twisted my ankle several times wearing them. It could be because I'm a bit klutzy too.

Before I was a runner, I used to buy inexpensive shoes for work. If you think about how much time you spend on your feet at work (and while running), you know the importance of a good pair of shoes. Don't skimp when it comes to your work shoes.

BTW, I enjoy reading your blog. I hope this week at work will be much better than last week. Hang in there! Oh, and I'll be in Boston in April too!

  4. I love the bridesmaids dresses! What a pretty color. I am not sure if I have seen that shade of blue on a dress before.

I hope your shin starts to feel better :( I am still waiting for mine to heal :(

  5. I have a pair of Danskos and wore them rarely because my old running shoes were just more comfortable and I didn't notice the Danskos doing anything for me. Hope your skin feels better!

  6. One of your previous posts about dreading going into work made me sad. I understand never being good enough or efficient enough or simply never working hard enough to please the boss. I don't know if there's a solution at this point. My parents always tell me to "hang in there," since so many people our age don't even have jobs. That certainly doesn't make it any easier to get up and go in, but I guess it's something to think about. Good luck with your running - I hope it keeps you sane. Could you maybe have a muscle strain in your shin? It doesn't seem like it'd be shin splints or a stress fracture, but not stretching calves well enough tends to wreak havoc down there after a while.

  8. I've worn Danskos & Birkenstocks to work, but lately have stuck to expired running shoes. The biggest thing I've noticed to help my legs not get so tired during work is the TEDs.

The dish looks really good! I know sausage isn't that healthy, but it's sooo yummy.

  9. I'm so sorry you've been having such a tough time lately. I've had a crazy week and haven't had time to comment, but I've been reading. I hope things look up soon. I'm pretty sure I would have been curled up in a fetal position in the corner if I had that much stress at work. I really sincerely hope that the long-term experience that you are gaining will be helpful, and you can look back on your first difficult months of being a nurse from a position of confidence and peace with your job. ((Susan))

And I hope the shin is going to be okay! Good call on giving it a little time.

  10. Do you like group turkey at all? That might be a nice alternative to the sausage.

  12. I just picked up 3 old issues of Cooking Light from the gym and have been drooling before bed every night!!

One of my good friends wears Danskos. I always look at them in stores and admire them from afar since yes, they are wee bit expensive. You should definitely invest in a great pair of shoes though...Just think how important your leg health is to your daily life!

What a beautiful dress!! I can't wait to see it on you!!

  13. I'm obsessed with Cooking Light! I have a subscription too, LOVE IT :) that pasta looks tasty - adding a little turkey sausage is a *big* flavor boost in my opinion. Delicious!

the hospital setting is very rough on the feet - no tips from this girl, I was always wearing running shoes or flats. neither of which worked out That great, but eh. I always notice a lot of Crocs - not sure if you're interested in that route... ;)
